14,761 watch Chivas win Super Classic of Legends at PGE Park

PORTLAND, Ore. - In a festival-like atmosphere, Chivas de Guadalajara captured a 2-0 win over Club America in the Super Classic of Legends at PGE Park in front of 14,761 Friday night. The international soccer exhibition between former players from two of Mexico’s most popular teams attracted the second largest attendance for a PGE Park event this year.

Several former Mexican National Team members were featured in the Super Classic of Legends including Chivas midfielder Alberto Coyote, who represented Mexico from 1994-2001. Among the Club America legends included midfielder Gonzalo Farfan who earned 34 caps with the Mexican National Team and participated in the 1998 World Cup in France.

Chivas took a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute on a one-two combo. From a set piece about 25 yards out, the ball sailed to the back post before it was headed back across the goal mouth and then headed once more  into the back of the net. In the closing minutes, Chivas capped the night's scoring with a curling corner kick from the right corner into the back top corner of the goal.

The 14, 761 on hand for Super Classic of Legends was the second largest crowd at a PGE Park event this season. There was over 15,000 at PGE Park on July 4 as the Portland Beavers earned a walk-off win over the Tacoma Rainiers.

PGE Park will host USL First Division soccer on Saturday as the Portland Timbers battle the Vancouver Whitecaps on Nike Night at 7 p.m. The first 1,000 kids 14 and under will receive a mini Nike soccer ball courtesy of Tursi's Soccer Store. For more information, visit www.portlandtimbers.com.
