In 1975, soccer was still, for the most part, a novel concept to the average American sports fan. But the emergence of the original Portland Timbers that season captured the attention of Portland denizens, kicking off a highly successful run of entertaining and memorable moments in the city’s rich sporting history.
Portland was home to the North American Soccer League franchise from 1975-82, a time period near and dear to the hearts of thousands of soccer fans in the city, affectionately known was “Soccer City USA.”
Building on the enthusiasm created by the original Timbers, top-level soccer returned to Portland in 2001. Today’s team competes in the USL First Division and once again has built a loyal following. Indeed, a Timbers match is more than a sporting event. The unique flavor of a Timbers match at PGE Park is unparalleled in area sporting circles, with “The Beautiful Game” again capturing the attention of fans of all ages.
The Timbers annually play 15 home matches at PGE Park as part of their league schedule, with a number of exhibition matches adding to the excitement. The season begins in April and concludes in early September, with a number of convenient and affordable ticket packages available.
